Vici Fix: The Next Generation of Mycorrhizal Products

For more than 400 million years, mycorrhizal fungi have formed the most important symbiotic relationship between plants and the soil. Yet in practice, commercial mycorrhizal products do not always perform as expected. Not because the concept doesn’t work, but because the way most products are manufactured makes the results unpredictable.

What is mycorrhiza, and how does the symbiosis work?

The name “mycorrhiza” is a contraction of “myco” (fungus) and “riza” (root): an obligate, mutually dependent symbiosis that 85–90% of terrestrial plants form with soil fungi. The plant provides the fungus with sugars produced through photosynthesis; in exchange, the fungus uses a fine network of
fungal threads (hyphae) to extract phosphorus, other nutrients, and water from the soil that the root itself cannot reach. That network makes a physical difference: whereas the nutrient uptake of an untreated root is limited
to a zone of just a few millimeters, mycorrhiza expands that effective uptake area to as much as 70 cm—an increase in the functional root system of up to 500 times. This gives the plant access to a multiple of the soil volume that the root alone could never reach.

The Problem with Traditional Mycorrhiza Products

Traditional mycorrhiza products are produced in vivo: the fungus grows in a greenhouse, alongside a host plant. The end product is a mixture of plant residues, substrate, and fungal material— labor-intensive to produce, difficult to standardize, and relatively expensive, resulting in inconsistent outcomes.

The reason lies in what is literally inside the product. An in vivo culture yields a mix of propagules: the collective term for all forms in which the fungus can survive:

✓ Root fragments with fungal mycelium, sometimes already dead before the product is applied
✓ Living hyphal networks, which are still capable of colonizing a new root
✓ Spores, the most stable form, which only germinate once conditions are favorable

A traditional product contains all these forms mixed together, in unknown and varying proportions. So you don’t know in advance how much of the product will actually be active: some of it is already dead, some has a limited chance of survival, and only the spores offer a reliable starting point. That explains why the effectiveness of traditional mycorrhiza products varies so much in practice:

Another key point: produced in vitro

Vici Fix is produced in controlled bioreactors, rather than in a greenhouse using a host plant. This in vitro process offers two direct advantages:

More efficient and more affordable — without host plants, substrate, or greenhouse space, production is more scalable, making Vici Fix more cost-effective than comparable in vivo products.

Higher and more consistent quality — the bioreactor process yields only live spores, rather than an undefined mixture of propagules.
